Take the next step

Whether you’re changing jobs or retiring, leaving your employer involves many decisions. As you move on to the next stage of your life, it’s important not to forget one important decision — what to do with your retirement plan account.

Make sure your decision is the right one for you. Consider your distribution options and their tax implications carefully.

Talk to your financial professional. If you don’t have one, American Funds IRA Rollover Specialists can put you in touch with your plan’s financial professional or refer you to one in your area.

Rollover Specialists are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern time at (800) 421-9923.

Review your options

Take advantage of the tools and information available:

  • Use the comparison chart to evaluate the pros and cons of each option.

  • Measure the tax implications and penalties of staying tax-deferred or cashing out with the Spend it or save it calculator.

  • Read our Frequently asked questions for specific answers about rolling your money to an IRA and about other options.

  • Review any additional information your employer provides regarding specific options for your plan.

Initiate a transaction

When you make your decision, there are several ways you can roll your money into an American Funds or other IRA or into your new plan:

  • Fill out the forms sent to you.

If you received forms from your employer in the mail, complete them using the accompanying instructions. Or, contact your benefits department to obtain the necessary forms.

  • Access forms online.

Log in to your account to download and print rollover and distribution forms for your plan. (This option may not be available for your plan.)

  • If moving your retirement plan account from a previous employer:

To roll a retirement plan account you have with a former employer to an American Funds plan, you will need to complete an Incoming Rollover Request form. Learn more.

  • Call the American Funds IRA Rollover Center.
