So you want to be a CIO? Industry vets weigh in

At Citywire RIA's inaugural Scottsdale CIO Summit, MK Campion of Avior Wealth Management and Peter Lazaroff of Plancorp tackled the ins and outs of investment leadership and whether the CIO role may soon be a thing of the past.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — What does it really take to be a top-performing chief investment officer in 2025? 
Taking the stage at Citywire RIA’s CIO Summit on Thursday afternoon, CIOs Mary Kathryn (MK) Campion of $5bn Avior Wealth Management and Peter Lazaroff of $6.4bn Plancorp took listeners under the hood to share what they’ve learned over their careers. 
In assuming leadership roles at large RIAs, the duo noted the importance of clear communication and remaining thoughtful in making connections, asking for feedback and gathering responses from others. 
‘Always ask the question so it causes other people in the room to think and to consider why the question was asked,’ Campion said. ‘Because of the groupthink that goes on, I think it’s really important to empower people who aren’t asking the questions to feel good about the fact that somebody else is asking the question they wanted to ask but didn’t.’
