Tracing Kristin Hull’s path from prison education to impact investing

The founder and CIO of Nia Impact Capital spoke to Citywire about how time teaching in schools and prisons helped shaped her approach to investing today.
While the worlds of teaching and investment management might appear disparate at first glance, for Kristin Hull, they’re inextricably linked. An educator in the Bay Area for over two decades before making the jump to financial services, Hull, 57, sees the throughline from her teaching days in her daily work advising clients. ‘I think that being able to understand the learning process helps me understand what a heavy lift it is for people to change their investments,’ Hull said. ‘Most people go out into the world and don’t know how to invest, and they end up with shame about that, so we’re trying to stop and name that.’ Hull’s path ultimately led her to launch Nia Impact Capital in 2017, a now-$530m RIA based in Oakland, Calif. The firm, which centers conscious investing around social justice, gender equity and environmental sustainability, is a reflection of her life dating back to her childhood, she said.
