The US Senate on Wednesday voted to confirm Paul Atkins to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under president Donald Trump.
Trump’s pick to lead Wall Street’s main regulatory agency received an affirmative 52-44 vote in the Senate body. Atkins is now set to take the helm at an agency that has been led by acting chair Mark Uyeda since Trump took office.
Atkins ‘brings a wealth of experience and dedication to safeguarding our capital markets,’ stated Senator Tim Scott, a Republican who chairs the Senate banking committee. ‘His tenure will mark a pivotal moment to roll back harmful Biden-era policies, promote capital formation and enhance opportunities for retail investors.’
Atkins formerly served as an SEC commissioner during the presidency of George W. Bush. A lawyer by training, he has
advocated against the use of regulation by enforcement at the SEC and criticized the agency’s scrutiny of off-channel communication by advisors and broker-dealer representatives.
